Sometimes homeowners reach out for help when they aren't selling. They want insight on home improvements with resale in mind, or they may need a service provider. I welcome these questions because, frankly, I have attended thousands of home inspections and work to maintain the 1951 home I have owned for 27 years.
I believe some people don't realize that periodic maintenance is part of homeownership and can extend the life of your systems while preventing additional damage. Here are my 5 maintenance tips for fall:
Roof
Have a roofer out to inspect your roof. You may need minor repairs to keep your roof waterproof and extend its life.Gutters and downspouts
Clean your gutters and downspouts. If gutters and downspouts aren't kept clean, trapped water could cause dry rot damage to your home.Large trees
Do you have large trees? Large trees require maintenance. A fallen tree in a storm could cause significant damage and injury. You should have an arborist maintain them periodically to ensure they are healthy.Balconies and decks
They support your furniture and loved ones. People often overlook this, but hidden dry rot can weaken the structure. Have them inspected periodically to ensure the support system is in good shape.Water heater
Clean your water heater. Descaling/flushing will keep it clean and extend its life. This depends on how old your water heater is. I spoke to my go-to plumber, and he said if a water heater is too old and has never been flushed, you may not want to risk flushing it because it could leak. He installed a tankless water heater for me, and I have had him flush it every other year.
And as always, if you, your neighbors, friends, or family are looking to make a move and want expert insights without any pressure, with high creativity and ethics, please share my contact information. Thanks for the support.
